Winter is a time when our skin can really take a beating, especially if you live in an area with cold temperatures and snow. Do you have any pitfalls when it comes to your winter skincare? We have a great list of 13 skincare tips to help you keep a healthy glow throughout the winter months.

13 Skin Care Tips for Winter Beauty
Don’t skimp on sunscreen
Sunscreen isn’t just for summer. The sun can be just as harsh in the winter particularly when the sun reflects off the snow. You may have seen people with tan lines from their ski goggles. Not only is that NOT a good look, it also means they did not protect their skin. The Winter sun also contributes to skin’s dryness. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before exposure for best results.
Use a New Moisturizer
Depending on the season, our skin will often need a different moisturizer. I the winter, you may need an oil-based moisturizer rather than a water-based one to add an extra layer of protection to your skin. Skip anything alcohol-based like toners, and pay extra attention to your skin by using a night cream daily.
Wear Gloves
Our hands can get very dry in the winter. In addition to daily moisturizing, make sure to protect them by wearing gloves or mittens. Our hands don’t produce as much oil as our faces. They can become itchy, cracked, and sore if you are not careful.
Don’t forget Your Lips
Don’t neglect your lips. Be sure to apply a moisturizing lip balm (such as petroleum jelly or another ointment). This will help heal dry, cracked lips and protect them from getting chapped. I always have a lip balm in my pocket, purse, and my car.

Avoid Hot Baths
This is a hard one for me. I love a hot bath to warm up when I’m chilly. While a hot bath may feel amazing, it actually draws the natural oils out of your skin. It’s better to use warm water and take showers instead of baths. The quicker you can make them, the better. Moisturize right after as well.
Don’t Keep the Heat To High
Turn the heat down a bit and opt for extra layers instead. When your house is overheated, it takes the humidity out of the air, which will dry you out.
Reapply Moisturizers After Washing
Always reapply your moisturizers after washing your hands, body or face. My hands get really dry so I keep an extra moisturizer in my car or purse for touch-ups as well.
Exfoliate Once a Week
Exfoliating your skin helps get rid of the dry layer that will build up over time. Try to use a moisturizing exfoliator if possible. Remember not to over-exfoliate, which can irritate your skin.
Use Mild Soap
Harsh soaps like the antibacterial options can really dry out your skin. During the winter months, try to use a soap with built-in moisturizers or those containing glycerine. Avoid covering your entire body with soap. Instead, use soap on the areas that tend to get smelly. Your shampoo will contribute to washing the rest of your body. Opt for those that are gentle and fragrance-free.

Eat Right and Stay Hydrated
Staying hydrated is key for healthy skin all year round, but especially in winter. You might consider supplements containing Omega-3 fatty acids as well. (always ask your healthcare provider before taking any supplements).
Where non-irritating clothing
A lot of fabrics meant for the cold weather can irritate your skin. Keep wool and other rough clothing as an outer layer away from your skin. Clothing that comes in contact with your skin should be light layers that are breathable and soft. If your clothes get wet, change out of them quickly as they can also irritate your skin.
See a Specialist
Seek the advice of a dermatologist f you are unsure how to best take care of your skin during the winter months. They can give you the best advice according to your individual needs.
Pamper Yourself
Winter is the best time to really pamper your skin. You might go for an oil massage or a moisturizing facial. Ask for some gift cards for the holidays. These are my favorite gifts to give and receive.
